BATH TIPS

Soothing sanctuary courtesy of Hinkley Lighting

Adequate bathroom lighting is not only essential for grooming, but the bathroom is becoming a sanctuary where you can relax and recharge. Creating a space that feels comfortable and imparts a feeling that's clean and inviting can set the right mood for a spa-like retreat. As the bathroom increasingly becomes a place to relax and recharge, complete with luxurious amenities like a steam shower, spa tub or a fireplace, the lighting requires extra thought. And when it's done right, the payoff is great. After all, this is the room where you start and end your day. Just don't forget to follow the simple rules of form and function.

"In this case, all aspects of the lighting must be well thought out and executed. No one will enjoy a 'spa' experience if they cannot see well or if they don't look fabulous when looking in the mirror! So, you need to use a combination of task lighting (especially at the sinks and make-up areas), as well as ambient and mood lighting in order to create the desired relaxation that one needs in a spa environment. Also, you want to avoid seeing the source of the lights - so using diffusers and shades is important - nothing will kill a relaxing mood more quickly than being stunned with the 'burn' of a light bulb in your eyes. Dimmers are also key."

- Lisa Rachelle McDennon
"The most important element to creating a spa-like or relaxed environment in the bath is control. Several lighting situations and dimmers are a must when creating this type of atmosphere."

- Carrie Fundingsland
